Eosinophilic esophagitis: an increasingly recognized cause of dysphagia, food impaction, and refractory heartburn.
Eosinophilic esophagitis is an increasingly recognized cause of a variety of esophageal symptoms, including dysphagia, food impaction, atypical chest pain, and heartburn that does not respond to medical therapy. Its cause is unknown, but allergic and immune-mediated mechanisms similar to those of asthma and other atopic diseases are implicated.
متن کاملUpdate on Functional Heartburn.
The definition of functional heartburn has been refined over the years. It is currently described, based upon Rome IV criteria, as typical heartburn symptoms in the presence of normal upper endoscopy findings (including normal biopsies), normal esophageal pH testing, and a negative association between symptoms and reflux events. متن کاملHypothesis: Dent disease is an underrecognized cause of focal glomerulosclerosis.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Dent disease is a hereditary form of progressive renal failure characterized by hypercalciuria and proximal tubular dysfunction. The clinical presentation is often insidious with the majority of patients remaining asymptomatic throughout childhood. Despite the seemingly mild, early course, more than 20% of 32 asymptomatic patients in one study had biopsy evidence of fo...
متن کاملSecondary bile acids: an underrecognized cause of colon cancer
Bile acids were first proposed as carcinogens in 1939. Since then, accumulated evidence has linked exposure of cells of the gastrointestinal tract to repeated high physiologic levels of bile acids as an important risk factor for gastrointestinal cancers. High exposure to bile acids may occur in a number of settings, but most importantly, is prevalent among individuals who have a high dietary fa...
متن کاملAlpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency: An underrecognized, treatable cause of COPD.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is common but underrecognized. Because delayed diagnosis is thought to be associated with adverse outcomes, clinicians are encouraged to follow available guidelines and test for the disease in all symptomatic adults with fixed airflow obstruction. The weight of available evidence supports the biochemical and clinical efficacy of intravenous augmentation therapy. P...
